Lee-Ann Curren. Island. Minusgrade.

1. 5x I:

I was... a nerdy child

I am... a nerdy adult

I’m going to... grow into a nerdy old lady and probably get a farm with donkeys and dogs and cats, on top of a hill overlooking a perfect point break that I'll surf on a single fin, and I'll talk shit to the people who come visit me and offer them cookies and tea.

I've never... done an air reverse (yet)

I've always wanted to... learn to fly a plane

2. Congrats on the new edit. How did this project come about?

LA: It's basically just us finding excuses to go back to Iceland and do a road trip! This year we actually scored some really fun waves and with the seasons changing in the month of November the scenery was amazing. And we got to use real inspiring music from one of my favorite Icelandic bands Samaris. So it was a pleasure to work on the edit.

3. One of the joys of travel and surfing is the people we meet – who's been (one of) the most interesting characters you’ve met during this trip?

LA: Well, it's hard to pick one because there are some really interesting characters in Iceland! But I'll talk about Heidar because he's in the edit getting a really good barrel. Him and Elli Thor (photographer) are always together and the funnest people to be around. Always wearing the biggest smile on his face, surf stoked and he's an amazing tube rider. I've always known him to be super strict with his diet (paleo) but this time I saw him eat a huge piece of chocolate cake and a pizza, so I think he's mellowed out on this a little ! But I'd say look out for him in the near future, because he always comes up with creative projects and films.

4. Iceland is flooding our social media timelines. Does the reality hold up to the expectations? How was filming and surfing over there compared to other locations?

LA: It depends what you expect! I wouldn't recommend it, if you really want to score and surf your brains out during your holidays. There is a lot of driving around involved, and the cold makes surfing a little (way!) more challenging. The weather changes a lot and it's tricky to read the maps and find spots. But when you do it's rewarding. If you're willing to road trip in the most beautiful scenery, without expectations, go to hot pools in between surfs and meet cool people, then Iceland is your place.

Claudia: As Lee-Ann said, the best is to travel with no expectations. Getting a few good waves requires a lot of energy, logistics, patience... and money (life can be pretty expensive)!! Filming in Iceland can be a real struggle compared to hot places: batteries draining, cold (shaking) hands, wind chills etc. Of course, the scenery makes it all worth it.

Die Realität nordischer Surftrips!

5. So where did you end up spending your down time and what where you up to in between swells?

LA: If I'm in the country side I'll just get cosy with a good book, or drive around and explore because the coastline holds a lot of undiscovered spots. If I'm in town in Reykjavik, I'll check out the music scene, have coffees with friends, go to the hot pools and relax, eat hot dogs...

6. Most unusual/memorable moment of the trip?

LA: Adopting a dog (Bowie) at my friend's farm! That was unusual and memorable. He followed us for the rest of the road trip, then got on a plane to France with me and now he hangs out with us on french beaches everyday.

Claudia: Filming surfing surrounded by icebergs at the Glacier Lagoon. We were pretty stoked to find decent waves in this unreal place.

Welcome to the family Bowie.

7. What's next for you guys?

LA: I'm going to Australia on March 10th and then South Africa and Mozambique, so a little bit of sun for me!

Claudia: I am working on a few different photo & video projects but I might join Lee-Ann on this South Africa trip!

Merci beaucoup!
