Der Spätsommer spult Hochdrucksysteme in Endlosschleife ab. Vorfreude wird zu Ungeduld, wird zu Resignation. Kollektives Warten. Warten auf die Herbstswells; auf gute Bänke; auf günstigen Wind; auf die richtige Tide. Dabei keine Spur von Geduld. Ganz Scheveningen steht unter Strom: Sideshore-Sturm, 150 Leute im Wasser - keine Seltenheit.
Die holländischen Locals sind Optimisten, gezwungenermaßen. Es ist diesig, grau, kalt und inzwischen auch verdammt crowded. Die Surfszene hat kalifornische Ausmaße angenommen: Die bunten Foamies der Surfschulen segeln durch den Shorebreak. Die Boards der talentierten Grommets sehen aus wie Panini-Alben. Die Umkleidekabinen und warmen Duschen der Clubhäuser sind das ganze Jahr über geöffnet. Kooks, Pros, Touris, Locals und alle dazwischen sitzen Schulter an Schulter im Lineup. Doch es gibt wenige, die ,,den guten alten Zeiten’’ hinterher trauern. ,,Lekker gezellig, joh!’’. Sowieso ist in Holland das Meiste entweder ,,lekker’’ oder ,,gezellig’’, oder beides. Diese unerschütterlich positive Grundeinstellung der Community ist ansteckend. Die launische Nordsee wird mit charmanter Selbstironie ausgekontert und trotzdem wird Surfkultur zelebriert. Das ganze Unterfangen ist ernst und absurd zugleich.
Ein Produkt dieser Szene ist die eingeschworene Crew lokaler Surffotografen, die sich jeweils auf eine bestimmte Perspektive eingeschossen haben. Inzwischen ist die komplette Bandbreite abgedeckt - es gibt Froschmänner im Lineup, Dronenpiloten und Fotografen, die keinen Actionshot verpassen. Jop Hermans hat über die Jahre seinen eigenen Blick entwickelt. Er geht ein, zwei Schritte zurück und fängt das Gesamtbild ein. "Surf Landscapes" mit der Welle als Subjekt. Das Ergebnis sind Momentaufnahmen, die die Stimmung der besten Nordsee-Sessions unverfälscht widergeben. Nur die Wellen selbst wirken oft unwirklich, aber das ist Jops perfektem Timing zu verdanken.
Jop hat für uns die ersten echten Herbstswells Ende Oktober dokumentiert und anschließend noch ein paar Fragen zu sich und seiner Kunst beantwortet. Für unsere Freunde in Scheveningen und Umgebung bringen wir das Interview hier im O-Ton:
Myself & my gear
Ever since I came back home to The Netherlands in 2013, after a couple years of work and travel, I started to shoot surf. I’ve seen the most impressive surf in Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia, only back then my surfing heart wasn’t beating as hard as it does now.
My Nikon D7000 took me all the way through my European surf trips. The lenses I’ve been using are a Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8 telezoom and a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 zoomlens. I’ve definitely been fantasizing about a full frame camera equipped with high quality lenses, but being able to be on the road a couple months every year has been my priority so far. Choices…
The telezoom combined with a crop sensor gives me just that extra range for shooting surf further out at sea. Whenever the telezoom isn’t enough, I like to switch from surfing close ups to – what I like to call – surf landscape photography. Capturing coastal sceneries with surf as the subject. Adventure photographer Chris Burkhard has been an inspiration. He was one of the first ones to show me the combination of landscape and surf can be a powerful medium for storytelling.
Something I've learned to accept and by now really appreciate is the challenge of shooting the same place over and over again. It asks for a more creative approach, not to end up with piles of similar looking material. I enjoy this creative process.
Surfing in The Netherlands
If you want to surf in The Netherlands you'd better have a flexible agenda! Conditions are anything but consistent, mostly with just a couple hours of quality waves - with offshore wind, if you’re lucky. Although the mostly dominant southwest winds can produce fun and at times challenging surf. Some shelter from this SW breeze is welcome though. The Scheveningen harbor offers some much needed protection.
About the first autumn swell
Well, it wasn’t just one swell. The last two weeks of October, there were three days that had some exceptional Northsea conditions.
My favorite moment must have been on the 30th of October. After two days of messy groundswell from the north, jumbled up by powerful onshore wind, this day started with strong offshore winds. Generally, with a breeze this strong, the leftover swell gets blown back out to the shallow Northsea. Without checking any beachcams, I packed my camera to go for a walk at the seaside. Expecting nothing more than some knee high ankle snappers. When I cycled up to the beach, this view welcomed me:
Apparently, a smaller low-pressure system off the English east coast blew some fresh clean swell our way. Surprise, surprise - one of the best days of the year.
